Thermochromic inks – Coors Light color change

5 Nov 2014 1 min read· By the Surisa technical team

Our reversible heat-sensitive inks have the peculiarity of changing colour as the temperature rises. With a little imagination, these inks can offer an impressive range of possibilities in the field of corporate marketing.

Their main application is to reveal hidden messages, so that when a certain temperature is reached, the user of the product can read something, discover a prize, see a logo or symbol.

Coors Light beer bottle with thermochromic ink

In the case of Coors beer, it is not exactly this, since, without the need to print any additional text, everyone who knows the beer associates the colour change with cold. The Coors Light beer label features mountains with silver edging.

WHITE MOUNTAINS = WARM BEER

BLUE MOUNTAINS = COLD BEER

The combination of conventional and heat-sensitive inks means that a colour change from white to blue on the mountains of its emblem – after cooling the bottle in the fridge – indicates that the beer is at its ideal drinking temperature. No one is in any doubt. Blue mountains equals beer at its best. The heat-sensitive ink, in this case, is calibrated at 8ºC (46ºF). These inks allow calibration at any temperature between -10ºC and +69ºC; you just need to know at what temperature you want the colour change for our production department to calibrate the ink at the ideal temperature for the change.

Coors Light can changing colour as it cools

The colour change is reversible: imagine you take the beer out of the fridge and the phone rings. The beer warms up and the mountains turn white again. We normally touch the container to check the temperature, but this is very unreliable because the liquid inside may be warmer than we think. The ink is calibrated to the ideal temperature in conjunction with the inside temperature, not the outside.
